Howrah Janbari — A Legacy of Knowledge & Spirituality

Preserving 500 years of heritage, culture and divine tradition.

The Story in Motion

The history of Janbari, in its own words

Pandit Ramaprasad Bhattacharya recounts the five-century tradition of the house — its founding, its deities and its sacred practices.

Ramaprasad Bhattacharya — History of Janbari, Howrah

The Origin

A house of knowledge born before dawn

Nearly five hundred years ago, where the sacred Ganga ran past ancient Baligram — today's Bali in Howrah — the seer Srimat Achyut Panchanan walked to his morning rites in the stillness of Brahma Muhurta. Years before, he had drawn a divine four-armed idol of Goddess Kali from a canal of the river.

On that morning a dark-complexioned Brahmin barred his path, asking where Lord Shani then stood. When the seer answered truly, the Brahmin revealed his divine nature, took his outward sight and granted him a rarer gift — inner vision, and a sacred system of knowledge. For this mastery the lineage was honoured with the title Jan, from the root Jña, to know; and their home became Janbari, the house of knowledge.

500Years of Heritage
  1. c. 16th Century

    The goddess from the Ganga

Srimat Achyut Panchanan recovers a four-armed idol of Kali from a canal of the Ganga at ancient Baligram, and is granted inner vision and the sacred sciences.

  2. ~250 years later

Royal patronage & a land grant

The descendants earn the favour of Maharaja Krishnachandra and Nawab Wajed Ali Khan, receiving two hundred bighas of tax-free land near Balupukur — today's Chakraberiya, Howrah.

  3. The settlement

    The deities come home

Ramkumar and Nabakumar Bhattacharya bring the Kali idol and the Damodar Narayan Shaligram to the settlement, near the old course of the Saraswati where, legend holds, Chand Saudagar once sailed to trade.

  4. Today

    A living tradition

Goddess Dakshina Kali and the Damodar Shaligram Shila are worshipped to this day upon the established Panchamundi Siddha Asana, carried forward by Pandit Ramaprasad Bhattacharya and the next generation.
